Back to: Why Do People Travel
People travel for many reasons, which are often called “motivations.” Understanding these motivations helps us anticipate guest needs. The main categories of travel motivations are:
-
Physical Motivators: Related to relaxation, health, and sports. Examples: Doing yoga in a retreat in Pokhara, going on a trek for exercise, or simply resting by a lakeside.
-
Cultural Motivators: The desire to learn about other cultures. Examples: Visiting ancient temples, observing a traditional Tharu dance in Chitwan, or learning to cook Nepali food.
-
Interpersonal Motivators: The desire to meet new people, visit friends or relatives, or escape from routine. Example: A Nepali person living abroad (NRN) coming home to visit family.
-
Status and Prestige Motivators: Related to personal development, ego, and recognition. Example: Climbing a challenging peak like Island Peak or completing the demanding Manaslu Circuit trek.
