Back to: Evolution and Development of Tourism
Tourism has changed greatly over time. In ancient times, people traveled mainly for trade, religious pilgrimages (like Lumbini), or to attend festivals. The word “tour” became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries when young European nobles went on the “Grand Tour” for education. In Nepal, organized tourism began after 1950 when the country opened its borders to the outside world. Since then, it has grown from a few adventurous trekkers to millions of visitors exploring the country’s diverse offerings.
