Classification of Hotel Properties
To help guests choose the right place to stay, hotels are classified into different types and categories. This can be based on their location, target market, level of service, or the facilities they offer.

  • By Location:

    • City Hotels: Located in the heart of cities, like the many hotels in Kathmandu’s Thamel or Lalitpur. They cater to business travelers and tourists who want to be close to attractions.

    • Resort Hotels: Located in vacation destinations, like the lakeside resorts in Pokhara or jungle resorts near Chitwan National Park. They offer recreational facilities and activities.

    • Motels: Usually found along highways, providing easy parking and basic accommodation for road travelers. You might find these on the highways connecting major Nepali cities.

    • Airport Hotels: Located near airports for the convenience of transit passengers, like those near Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

  • By Target Market:

    • Commercial Hotels: Cater mainly to business travelers, with facilities like meeting rooms and business centers.

    • Convention Hotels: Large hotels designed to host big conferences and events.

    • Suite Hotels: Offer rooms with separate living and sleeping areas, ideal for longer stays or families.

    • Bed and Breakfasts (B&Bs) / Homestays: Small, often family-run establishments offering a room and breakfast. Community homestays in places like Sirubari or Ghalegaun in Nepal are excellent examples.

  • By Level of Service:

    • Luxury / Five-Star: Offer the highest level of service, extensive facilities, and impeccable attention to detail. Examples include the Dwarika’s Hotel or the Hyatt Regency in Kathmandu.

    • Mid-Range / Three-Star: Offer comfortable, full-service accommodation at a more affordable price. Many hotels in the center of Pokhara fall into this category.

    • Economy / Budget / One-Star: Provide clean, safe, and basic accommodation with limited facilities. This includes most tea houses on trekking routes and budget hotels in tourist areas.

  • Unique Property Types in Nepal:

    • Tea Houses / Lodges: Found along trekking routes, these provide basic lodging, meals, and a warm place to rest. They are the backbone of Nepal’s trekking industry.

    • Heritage Hotels: These are converted palaces or traditional homes that offer guests a chance to experience Nepali history and architecture, like Hotel Shanker or the Dwarika’s.

    • Eco-Lodges: Built with sustainable materials and practices, these lodges focus on minimizing their environmental impact and supporting local communities, often found in or near conservation areas.
